Intraspecific functional trait variation in weeds: A strategy in response to competition with crop and weed plants

نویسندگان

چکیده

Weeds are a key component of agroecosystems and compete with crop plants. Crop-weed competition has been widely investigated over the past decades, although how functional traits mediate these competitive interactions rarely explored. In this study, we measured in 4400 individual plants belonging to 32 weed species, growing among four crops differing traits. We assessed intraspecific variation response but also other weeds. found that most abundant weeds have lower trait variability than species for leaf dry matter content (LDMC), pattern was not observed canopy height (CH) nor specific area (SLA). tended grow taller higher LDMC values when CH increased. propose display ‘crop matching’ strategy, tending match competition. weed-weed affected traits, sometimes more strongly crop-weed This study highlights is important consider investigating processes underlying community assembly, especially resource Further studies required identify source consequences fitness.

When does intraspecific trait variation contribute to functional betadiversity?

1. Intraspecific trait variation (ITV) is hypothesized to play an important role in community assembly and the maintenance of biodiversity. However, fundamental gaps remain in our understanding of how ITV contributes to mechanisms that create spatial variation in the functional-trait composition of communities (functional b-diversity). Importantly, ITV may influence the perceived importance of ...

Intraspecific functional trait variation and performance of Populous tremuloides

The fact that plant-trait and functionaltrait syndromes can describe plant growth strategies, and as a result their ecological requirements, has gained considerable importance in ecology (Grime et al., 1997; Westoby et al., 2002). At the global scale, the existence of a major axis of specialization among plants has been determined by measuring leaf functional traits; this axis highlights a fund...

Intraspecific genetic variation and competition interact to influence niche expansion.

Theory and empirical evidence show that intraspecific competition can drive selection favouring the use of novel resources (i.e. niche expansion). The evolutionary response to such selection depends on genetic variation for resource use. However, while genetic variation might facilitate niche expansion, genetically diverse groups may also experience weaker competition, reducing density-dependen...
